Each of our horses come from different backgrounds. And just like us, they have their favorite friends; human, and horse. Scroll through our gallery to learn about each of these amazing creatures.
Godfrey is a 28 year old Chestnut Quarter Horse. He stands about 14.2 hands. He loves people and loves attention. He is what we call the Curious George of the barn. He is also the King of his paddock. Godfrey is the eldest and the "class clown" of the herd. He has been with us since he was 5 years old. He was a previous trail horse that was a bit too small and spunky for his owner. He loves to nuzzle with those in wheel chairs, and to be the center of attention. Godfrey is well known for sticking his tongue out in pictures.
CoCo, “Talk a Lot,” is a 26 year old Welsh pony from Virginia. She showed in The hunter/Jumper ring for many years. Her riders out grew her and she was put out in a pasture for years, where she was also bred. Her owners contacted Jamie winter of 2016 to see if CoCo could be of use in the BDRR ministry, as she is a seasoned and experienced pony with a great heart and personality with many years left to serve a purpose. CoCo has become quite popular at BDRR particularly with those with low confidence and physical challenges.
Freddie is a 9 year old thoroughbred bay gelding who was fortunate enough to find us just before he was sent to slaughter from his racing home in Florida. Here at Blissful Dreams, Freddie became fast friends with Glee and Myrth. Other than his training on the race track, Freddie came to us not knowing much of anything else. After months of hard work and re-training, Freddie has become an essential part of the program, with riders of all levels for which he now serves. He has become a favorite of everyone, with his sweet personality and giant heart.
Glee is a 16-year-old thoroughbred bay mare whose father, Go For Gin, won the Ky Derby in 1994. After a four-year career racing, she was rescued from a kill pen in 2015. Blissful Dreams gave Glee a second chance in life. Glee and Myrth were rescued together from the kill pen and are best of friends. When first arriving here, she had to be able to see Myrth. Whatever these two went through together had to be traumatic. Glee has since gained trust in all of us at BDRR. After a couple years of training, she now enjoys her new career as a therapy horse for both children and adults. She has become quite the therapist as she has a sense of knowing when someone is in need of a good friend.
Waffle is now a 18-year-old 17.0 hand Belgian draft mare that was a 5-year-old Alpharetta, GA girl advertised on Craig’s list when we found her. She was basically just a backyard pet and had never been ridden before. When she arrived at Blissful, she was absolutely terrified of the ducks in the pond. She not only overcame her fear of ducks but also learned how to jump, which turned out to be one of her favorite things to do. Waffle is the big gentle giant of the barn that loves to give kisses for treats.
Myrth is a 12-year-old Percheron cross mare that was rescued from Ron Danta and Danny Robertshaw (Ron and Danny were Jamie’s trainers and mentors growing up). She was severely underweight and covered in scrapes and cuts. Ron and Danny sent Myrth to Blissful Dreams, where Jamie and her daughter, Sam, began to work with her and found a job and a purpose for her. When Myrth arrived, she was very much to herself and very skittish. Little did we know that she would have the job of helping Sam through severe anxiety and stress in an extremely difficult and challenging time in her life. Sam helped Myrth find her personality, teaching her how to jump and how to smile. Myrth helped Sam overcome life struggles. The once beaten up and reserved painted horse now gives kisses and smiles bringing joy to those who visit.
Just like the horses, our dogs are also rescues. Vanna, Sheba, Keller, and Andi found their way to us through an amazing place called Waters Edge Great Dane Rescue.
Vanna, an Albino Great Dane, joined us in 2016 from Waters Edge Rescue, and was born without eyes. She was in a neglect situation as a puppy and was removed from the situation. She found her way to Blissful Dreams as a 2-year-old.
Sheba, a Merle Great Dane, joined us in 2014 from Waters Edge Great Dane Rescue. She was surrendered to the rescue at 6 months old. She is the eldest Great Dane and the “lap dog” of the pack.
Keller is a blind and deaf Great Dane, adopted from Water’s Edge in late 2021 at the age of 7 months. He was in a hoarding situation in NC with his 5 brothers and sisters and was seized by animal control. He quickly became a foster fail at Blissful Dreams.
Meet Titan, Blissful Dreams' latest addition. He found his was to us from Danny and Ron's Rescue as an 11 week old puppy in January 2022. Titan is a Jack Russel Terrier mix. His personality makes up for his size.
Bleu is a 4 year old pitbull mix that was rescued in May at the Spartanburg Humane Society by Sam. She found him while volunteering in May 2023 and found out he had been at the humane society since September 2021 with not much interest. He loved and connected with Sam in a way that he didn't with the staff, and that solidified him being the one. He has come out of his shell a lot and is slowly learning to trust others.
Andi was a 5-year-old Harlequin Great Dane with one beautiful blue eye. He came from an Alabama puppy mill in a back yard with about 80 other dogs. He came to us as a 6-month-old foster that eventually was a foster fail. He was diagnosed with Wobbler’s syndrome at 3-years-old when he suddenly became paralyzed. Medication helped stabilize him from 2 years when he crossed the rainbow bridge at 5-years-old.
Our cats may be little in size compared to our horses, but they definitely rule the barn.
Toby was originally adopted from a local shelter, as a kitten, along with his sibling back in 2015. He and his sibling were surrendered once again to the shelter in August 2022. His sibling of 7 years was quickly adopted out, but Toby (with severe flea allergies) was left by himself at the shelter where we adopted him to have a furrever home at Blissful.
Chloe was adopted from Pet Helpers back in 2015 when she was 6 weeks old. Chloe is Miss personality always wanting pets and treats.
Sharkey was found eating out of a dumpster behind a restaurant with his feral mother in Mt. Pleasant, SC when he was about 5 weeks old and was able to curl up in one hand. While we were not able to catch his mother, we were able to easily catch Sharkey. Sharkey has made his home at Blissful for about 15 years now.
